Damnit; I hate journalists. I would be inclined to agree with the thesis of the study in question, but this reporter really annoyed me. She starts by saying that “a higher level of religious belief LEADS TO more crime and other undesirable social problems” (emphasis mine). Correlation is not causation. My gripe isn’t with the study, but the yellow journalist that reports on it.

You have to remember that “atheism” does not mean a lack of religious faith. Many of those countries are much more religious than they would appear, the difference being that those populations tend to worship The State.

Argentina, Cuba, Sweden, China, and North Korea all come to mind.

Atheism means lack of belief in any gods. Atheism does not mean the lack of religious superstition.

Malcolm, yeah I agree. I sort of assumed that was a given downside to marriage. But it is worth mentioning No one goes into a marriage thinking they will get divorced, but it happens all too often to ignore. Thanks for reading

This article omits a very large category of marital risk. Namely, the probability and cost of divorce (emotional, filial, financial, social and otherwise).

That single category of oft-ignored risk is the primary reason that I resolved to never marry.

Those maps are amazing. Antarctica has always been a fantastical place to me, as it remains so hidden. I saw photos of mountain peaks coming through the ice in Queen Maud Land years ago, which looked other-worldly to me. These graphs show just how weird the land is, once you get beneath the ice.
