There is something charming and childlike about counting down the days till Christmas, or as we celebrate in our home, Winter Solstice. I grew up with many fond memories of the traditions surrounding the holidays. The anticipation of the holiday was marked with a paper advent calendar with little windows and doors to open each day.
Throughout the month of November, I made it my project to sew one felt village house each day. By the end of the month, an entire little advent village was ready to hold treasures and help mark the days until Solstice.
I found some driftwood on the beach to hang the felt village. It looks like an art piece on my wall, a great decoration for the holidays!
Each little advent village house has a number embroidered on the back, 25 houses in total. Counting down from the top to the bottom, the last day, #1, is the solstice (or Christmas). I think we will use them by turning over just the house for the correct number in the count down, and then turning it back over when the next day is turned.
The little pockets for each house can hold candies, little toys, etc. This year, I decided to get a 3D wooden dinosaur puzzle and put one piece in each house. By the end, my kids will have all the pieces to make the 3D dinosaur puzzle.
