The Woman Behind the Pope

After the death of Pope John Paul II, the Catholic Church did its best to write Teresa out of his history. The BBC reveals the letters passed between them and the passionate friendship they shared. It is not surprising to me that such a misogynistic organization would fear his friendship with a woman. The entire documentary is an interesting look into the apparently common “chaste” relationships priests have with married women. ┬áThis way priests can feel love and connection with another person, without the threat of the relationship becoming “inappropriate.” I see this as a testament to the flaw in the organization, that love between two people should be so necessary and yet so forbidden from the life of the devout religious. Clearly, a need so deep-seated that even the world’s favorite Pope (now a Saint) bowed to the shear humanity of connection and love.
