I didn’t realize how impractical donating farm animals is for needy families. Not only is the animal another mouth to feed in a place where plant food is already scarce for human consumption, the majority of people cannot consume dairy (lactose intolerance).

Contrary to popular belief, donated animals do not “live off the land.” “In response to criticism that promoting animal agriculture in regions already plagued by desertification and drought is irresponsible, Heifer International and other organizations have “zero-grazing” requirements. Unfortunately, zero-grazing means that confined animals must have food and water actually brought to them. This food and water can be in direct competition with human consumption.” – freefromharm.org

Fortunately, for those who still want to donate to causes that alleviate world hunger, you still have options. One organization that provides nutritious plant foods for those in need are Plants-4-Hunger. They offer a gift donation option just like Heifer.

Give mindfully this year.
