So you know those $30 breathable crib bumpers? They are made of mesh and designed to fit tightly around the crib slats so if baby’s face gets smooshed against it, she can still breath. They are also great for keeping little arms and legs from becoming trapped in the crib slats. Well, I decided to spend $12 on fabric and make my own instead! I decided not to use a mesh fabric, because they are all made of plastic. I went with 100% cotton instead.

You will need:
Measuring tape
3 Yards of fabric (You will have left over fabric)
About a yard of strap material for the ties
(Sewing machine or serger, thread, sizzors, etc)
Let’s get started!
Because this is so basic, I’ll just tell you how I did it and show you lots of finished product pictures. Simply measure your child’s crib all the way around and add 5 extra inches to the total length. Then measure how tall you want the bumper to be on the crib. Measure these lengths on your fabric (You may need to patch extra length on to the 3 yards to get a long enough bumper).
Now cut 2 sets out of your fabric in the length and heighth you need. If you have a serger, simply serge the edges with the pattern sides facing out, leaving the ends. If you are using a sewing machine, or want to hide your serging, sew the edges together with wrong sides facing and inside out the entire piece when finished. I’m weird because I like the look of serged stitching, so I usually opt to have it facing out.

Lastly, serge on the 4 straps, two for each end of the bumper. If you are sewing, Iron flat a hem that folds inside, then sew with the ends of the straps between the hems, being sure to reinforce where the straps are with Xs.

Tada! And it even matches his room decore. When you tie it to the crib, interlace the material so that it stays nice and tight like this, and tie those ends tight!
