Dawkins has covered this in his book [amazon ASIN="978-0618918249"]The God Delusion[/amazon], but this 10 year study has concurred that the more religious a region is, the higher its social ills and immoral behaviors will be.
Damnit; I hate journalists. I would be inclined to agree with the thesis of the study in question, but this reporter really annoyed me. She starts by saying that “a higher level of religious belief LEADS TO more crime and other undesirable social problems” (emphasis mine). Correlation is not causation. My gripe isn’t with the study, but the yellow journalist that reports on it.

Yes, but the study was still done well. Even when talking about the positives of non-religion, people default to “causality” when speaking in terms of how things are related :)
